WHITE WAVE announces its 4th annual WAVE RISING SERIES featuring 19 dance companies showcased in the renowned three week festival. Every week will bring us six or more different companies presenting their works in New York City's only rising contemporary dancemakers festival. The companies present new choreography and established repertoire three times within a festival week. Participants in the WAVE RISING SERIES have been chosen by a selection panel of prominent figures from the dance world including festival curator Young Soon Kim. Each week commences with an exclusive Opening Night Gala Benefit and Performance, featuring presentations by that week's participating Festival companies. All shows presented during the Festival (October 21 - November 8, 2009) will take place at WHITE WAVE's John Ryan Theater, located at 25 Jay Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Series tickets are $25, GALA tickets are $50 and ticket packages are available by calling (212) 868-4444 or online at www.smarttix.com.
The WAVE RISING SERIES furthers WHITE WAVE's commitment to find, nurture, and broaden horizons for extraordinary artists. Participating companies have been selected for their artistic growth over the course of other WHITE WAVE festivals and/or their visionary independent productions. The Wave Rising Series also proudly serves as a platform for companies who may not have the resources to produce a full production on their own in New York City. Roslyn Sulcas of the New York Times summed up the importance of our contemporary dance showcase in her review of our 2008 WAVE RISING SERIES' stating that WHITE WAVE presents a "showcase (of) a broad variety of work. Tickets are cheap and dancing plentiful; it's a good mix."
This year's WAVE RISING SERIES includes the New York City debuts of two outstanding dance companies from Korea - Milmul Modern Dance Company and Coll Dance Project/Won Kim - made possible in part through the generous support of the Asian Cultural Council, the Korean Cultural Service NY and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Republic ..of Korea.
