Just outside the bustling port city of Busan, Haeundae is a sultry beach district famous for its sun, sand, and surf. Summer is in full swing, but when a geologists’ warning of a deadly undersea earthquake is ignored, a catastrophic tidal wave threatens to destroy everything. It’s a worst-case scenario for the thousands of resident and tourists: impact in 10 minutes. Man-sik (Sol Kyung-gu), who swore off the sea years ago after losing a colleague to a tsunami, struggles to survive and save the life of his girlfriend, Yeon-hee (Ha Ji-won) in the face of an unprecedented natural disaster.
Director Yoon Je-kyun’s 2009 disaster epic Haeundae was a true summer blockbuster, opening at #1 at the Korean box office and becoming one of the top five highest grossing Korean films. It went on to win multiple awards for cinematography and technical effects, and was widely screened internationally.
K-Cinema screening events are free with an RSVP. In Korean with English subtitles, 120 minutes.
